SUMMARY:Working Lunch with Li Ling (Vienna): "Governance of a Party-state:
Corruption\, Law\, and the Modus Operandi of the Chinese Communist Party"
DESCRIPTION:Li Ling will present her new book Governance of a Party-state:
Corruption\, Law\, and the Modus Operandi of the Chinese Communist Party (
CUP\, 2025)\, which unveils the often-hidden inner workings of China's Par
ty-state.  The Chinese Communist Party has crafted and relied on an integ
rated regulatory system\, where politics and law are fused\, to govern bot
h its internal operations and its relations with the state. Drawing on two
decades of in-depth research\, Li delves into the 'black box' of decision
-making in the Party-state\, analyzing the motivations and strategies that
drive individual and institutional choices in corruption\, anti-corruptio
n investigations\, and power struggles at the Politburo. This insightful b
ook reveals the critical role of rules and institution-building within the
Party\, illuminates the complex relationship between corruption and regim
e stability\, and captures the evolving dynamics of Party-state relations.
  A must-read for students\, academics\, business leaders\, and policymaker
s alike\, this book is an indispensable guide for anyone seeking a deeper
understanding of law\, politics\, and governance in China and its global i
mplications.\\r\\nLing Li teaches China Studies at the University of Vienn
a\, specializing in Chinese law and politics. She holds a doctorate in law
from Leiden University and has published extensively on corruption\, anti
-corruption\, and the political-legal system of the People's Republic of C
 hina (PRC).

SUMMARY:Workshop «Infrastructures and Violence: Logics\, Encounters\, Enta
nglements» with Prof. Jutta Bakonyi (Durham University\, Visiting Fellow
of the Institute for European Global Studies)
DESCRIPTION:Infrastructures are never merely technical. They distribute lif
 e chances\, foster authority\, symbolize power\, and facilitate integratio
n as they shape who and what is included or rendered expendable. Infrastru
ctures undergird imperialism\, shape geopolitical conflicts and\, while th
ey foster interdependence and cooperation\, they also become vehicles of d
ispossession\, displacement\, and exclusion. Infrastructures are both inst
ruments and objects of violence\; they determine how wars unfold and shape
their character and duration. In short\, infrastructures are constitutive
for political power and co-produce the forms and modalities – direct an
 d indirect\, fast and slow\, collective and individual – through which v
iolence is enacted and sustained. \\r\\nThis workshop brings together an
interdisciplinary group of scholars engaging with the manifold intersectio
ns of infrastructure and violence. Possible topics include but are not lim
ited to armed conflict and its material afterlives\; military and civil in
 frastructures\; planetary urbanization\; commodity chains and logistics\;
security technologies\; borders and regimes of containment\; development a
 nd its repercussions\; space\, earth and more-than-human environments\; an
 d the contested terrains of planning and building\, repair\, ruination\, a
 nd abandonment.Jutta Bakonyi [https://www.durham.ac.uk/staff/jutta-bakonyi
/] is Professor of Development and Conflict at Durham University in the
UK. Her main research interests are the causes\, actors and dynamics of
violence\, orders of violence beyond the state\, state dynamics and intern
ational interventions. She is also exploring the material and emotive side
of violence\, for example researching the nexus of displacement and urba
nisation [https://securityonthemove.co.uk/] and attending to the politic
 s of infrastructures [https://more.bham.ac.uk/port-infrastructure/]\, focu
ssing especially on ports and transport corridors. Her regional focus is o
