SUMMARY:Prof. Philippe Aghion (Collège de France\, INSEAD and LSE): "The P
ower of Innovation and the Future of Capitalism"
DESCRIPTION:The purpose of this lecture is to:\\r\\n1. Penetrate some of th
e great historical enigmas associated with the process of world growth\, s
uch as industrial takeoff\, major technological waves\, secular stagnation
\, the evolution of inequality\, convergence and divergence across countri
 es\, the middle-income trap\, and structural change.\\r\\n2. Revisit the g
reat debates over innovation and growth in developed nations: Can we foste
r innovation and creative destruction while at the same time protecting th
e environment and reducing inequality? Can we avoid creative destruction
 ’s potentially detrimental effects on employment\, health\, and well-bei
ng? Must we fear the digital and artificial intelligence revolutions?\\r\\
n3. Rethink the role of the state and civil society: What role can each of

aculty/philippe-aghion] / Speaker Professor at the Collège de France\, at
INSEAD\, and at the London School of Economics\, and a fellow of the Econ
ometric Society and of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. His rese
arch focuses on the economics of innovation and growth. With Peter Howitt\
, he pioneered the so-called Schumpeterian Growth theory which became a le
ading paradigm to analyze the interplay between growth\, innovation\, mark
et structure\, and firm dynamics. Much of this work is summarized in their
joint books Endogenous Growth Theory (MIT Press\, 1998) and The Economics
of Growth (MIT Press\, 2009)\, in his book with Rachel Griffith on Compet
ition and Growth (MIT Press\, 2006)\, in his survey “What Do We Learn fr
om Schumpeterian Growth Theory” (joint with U. Akcigit and P. Howitt)\,
and more recently in The Power of Creative Destruction (joint with C. Anto
nin and S. Bunel). In 2001\, Philippe Aghion received the Yrjo Jahnsson Aw
ard of the best European economist under age 45\, in 2009 he received the
John Von Neumann Award\, and in March 2020 he shared the BBVA “Frontier
of Knowledge Award” with Peter Howitt for “developing an economic grow
th theory based on the innovation that emerges from the process of creativ
 e destruction”. Prof. Frank C. Krysiak [https://wwz.unibas.ch/en/pages/

nk-krysiak/] / Guest on the Panel Professor of Environmental Economics at
the University of Basel. His research focuses on the interaction of econom
ics with ecology and politics\, economic theories of sustainability\, and
the effects of environmental policy on technological progress\, with appli
cations to climate and energy transition.\\r\\nProf. Rolf Weder [https://e
 uropa.unibas.ch/de/ueber-uns/personen/professuren/rolf-weder/] / Host Pro
fessor of International Economics at the University of Basel. His research
focuses on the effects of globalization on countries and the environment.
He is co-leader of a project on innovation (Innoscape.ch) at the Center f
or International Economics and Business (CIEB).\\r\\nLecture Series on Inn
ovation in the Global Economy The Lecture Series provides a platform for r
enowned researchers in Business and Economics to present their research re
sults and thoughts on “Innovation in the Global Economy” to a broad au
dience. The events tackle the challenges of globalization and new technolo
gies for society\, policy makers and companies. They also focus on the det
erminants of innovation in open economies. The discussion plays an importa
nt role in the Lecture Series. We are grateful for the support by the Clau
 dine and Hans-Heiner Zaeslin-Bustany-Foundation.
