SUMMARY:Workshop "Writing the Global History of Capitalism" with Prof. Sven
  Beckert (Harvard University)
DESCRIPTION:Over the last 10-15 years\, the "new history of capitalism" has
  been one of the most lively fields of debate within the discipline\, one 
 that spans different epochs and ranges across economic\, political\, cultu
 ral\, social and global history. The workshop is designed as an opportunit
 y to discuss major issues and new directions in the global historiography 
 of capitalism with one of its foremost practitioners.   \\r\\nThe works
 hop will be based on Prof. Beckert’s current book project\, which is a w
 ide-ranging reinterpretation of the history of capitalism over the last mi
 llennium. In preparation\, participants are asked to read two chapter-leng
 th excerpts from his forthcoming book\, which will be circulated two weeks

 ry of the United States in the nineteenth century\, with a particular emph
 asis on the history of capitalism\, including its economic\, social\, poli
 tical and transnational dimensions. He just published Empire of Cotton: A
  Global History [http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0375414142?keywords=Sven
 %20Beckert&qid=1444934506&ref_=sr_1_1&sr=8-1]\, the first global history o
 f the nineteenth century’s most important commodity. The book won the Ba
 ncroft Award\, The Philip Taft Award\, the Cundill Recognition for Excelle
 nce and was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize. The New York Times named 
 it one of the ten most important books of 2015. His other publications hav
 e focused on the nineteenth-century bourgeoisie\, on labor\, on democracy\
 , on global history and on the connections between slavery and capitalism.
  Currently\, he is at work on a history of capitalism. Beckert teaches cou
 rses on the political economy of modern capitalism\, the history of Americ
 an capitalism\, Gilded Age America\, labor history\, global capitalism and
  the history of European capitalism. Together with a group of students he 
 has also worked on the historical connections between Harvard and slavery
