E-Journal "Global Europe" on Europe in Crisis
Europe in the world after the economic crisis since 2009 and the political crisis of 2015 is the topic of Prof. Dr. Teresa Pullano's latest publication. The article has been published in the e-journal "Global Europe - Basel Papers on Europe in a Global Perspective".
In her paper, Teresa Pullano shows that the recent developments exposed the fractures and conflicts within the EU, but also within Europe at large. She argues that this has led to a repositioning of Europe in the world which is still ongoing. As a result, the classical European studies would need to be rethought accordingly: "It is no longer possible (and perhaps never was) to conceive of Europe in hermetic categories, but European space and politics need to be re-conceptualized as heterogeneous and uneven, and this always in connection with the transformations happening beyond the artificial idea of Europe as a defined continent." Following the call of Jean and John Comaroff, this paper concludes that there is a need to look at transformations in contemporary Europe as a consequence of restructuring happening in other parts of the world. The uneven development characterizing today’s Eurozone may be read as a return of colonial relations or unfettered capitalism to Europe.
Teresa Pullano is currently Assistant Professor at the Law Faculty and at the Institute of European Global Studies of the University of Basel. Her research focuses on the reconfiguration of citizenship and territory as forms of state organization. More specifically, she works on the conceptual, juridical and political relation between citizenship, territory and free movement in the European context. She is the author of "La citoyenneté européenne: un espace quasi-étatique" (Paris, Presses de Sciences Po, 2014).
