Madeleine Herren and Glenda Sluga Publish Op-Ed on Trumps International Policy in The Washington Post

Donald Trump

In an op-ed article in The Washington Post, Madeleine Herren-Oesch and Glenda Sluga comment on Donald Trump’s attitude towards international cooperation. In October, the President of the United States of America has declared that he regards the Universal Postal Union (UPU) as a harm to US-American interests.

Using this example, the two historians illustrate why, in doing so, the US is not just abandoning the UPU, but the idea behind it: conflict-solving within a loosely structured system of intergovernmental cooperation.

Madeleine Herren-Oesch is Professor of Modern History and the Director of the Institute for European Global Studies. While her fields of expertise cover 19th and 20th century history, her historiographical approach examines history through its strong connections to the contemporary world in its multilayered, global dimensions.

Glenda Sluga is Professor of International History, and ARC Kathleen Fitzpatrick Laureate Fellow at the University of Sydney She has published widely on the cultural history of international relations, internationalism, the history of European nationalisms, sovereignty, identity, immigration and gender history.
