Inaugural Lecture by Ralph Weber on Political Philosophy

Upon invitation of the Faculty of Philosophy and History, the public inaugural lecture of Prof. Dr. Ralph Weber took place in the Natural History Museum of Basel on April 14, 2015. The Assistant Professor of the Institute for European Global Studies spoke on China and political philosophy. The speech is available in full text.
Ralph Weber was born in 1974 in Johannesburg, South Africa. He studied Political Science (politics, economics and law) at the University of St. Gallen as well as at the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies in Geneva. Further, he studied at the University of Hawai'i in Manoa and the University of Peking, after which he worked as teaching and research assistant at the Chair of Political Science (Prof. Roland Kley) at the University of St. Gallen, where he also obtained his doctorate and has subsequently been teaching the history of political ideas and political theory. Since 2008, Weber has been employed by the University of Zurich, where he also worked on his habilitation on comparative philosophy. In December 2014, Weber began his work as an Assistant Professor of European Global Studies at the Institute for European Global Studies of the University of Basel.
The Institute for European Global Studies is an interdisciplinary research institute of the University of Basel. It conducts research on the development of Europe in a global context. The study program consists of a Master’s Program, a Postgraduate Program, as well as Certificate Courses. The Institute for European Global Studies was established in 1992 and is funded by the University of Basel. It is supported by personalities from the fields of economy, politics, and culture. Director of the Institute for European Global Studies is the historian Prof. Madeleine Herren-Oesch.
