International Fellow Dr. Fiona B. Adamson – #Connecting Europe for 25 Years
In 2017, Fiona B. Adamson spent three months as an International Fellow at the Institute for European Global Studies. During her time in Basel, as she reflects in her anniversary contribution, she found a stimulating and non-hierarchical environment, which allowed for productive academic debates and opened up new perspectives on colonial history and transnational entanglements.
I was fortunate to be a Visiting Fellow at the Institute for European Global Studies from October to December 2017. In addition to the beautiful setting and the friendly atmosphere, what I most appreciated about my time at the Institute were the interdisciplinary conversations that I had with colleagues working in the areas of global history, law, political theory and other fields. Comparing notes with them on how best to move beyond ‘methodological nationalism’ and investigate and theorize translocal and global connections was invaluable.
These conversations opened up new perspectives on my own research and helped me to better reflect on how colonial histories and transnational entanglements continue to shape contemporary debates about migration, diaspora politics and identity in Europe. The Institute provides a collegial, supportive and non-hierarchical setting in which Professors, PhD candidates, visiting international researchers and students are all able to participate in valuable research exchanges.
Also, I would be remiss if I didn’t mention that I have fond memories of an evening out with colleagues at the Basler Herbstmesse, and that the MA European Global Studies students hosted a very memorable and delicious fondue evening during my visit!

Dr. Fiona B. Adamson was an International Fellow at the Institute for European Global Studies from October to December 2017. She is a Reader (Associate Professor) of International Relations at SOAS, University of London. During her time in Basel, she worked on a research project called “Diasporic Europe: Migration, Transnational Assemblages and Disaggregated Sovereignty.”
During fall 2018 and spring 2019, we are publishing anniversary stories of researchers, students, alumni, and other people involved with the Institute. Their contributions follow the anniversary motto "Connecting Europe for 25 Years," illustrating the diverse ways in which the Institute for European Global Studies has been connecting lives and exploring local and global entanglements of knowledge for the past quarter of a century.
