The Global Consequences of Brexit – Panel Discussion

What effects does the Brexit have in the context of global processes and phenomena? This question was debated at a panel discussion at the Institute for European Global Studies. The event took place on Thursday, 13 October 2016, at 6.15 pm. It was chaired by Prof. Dr. Madeleine Herren-Oesch.

The debate titled "The Global Consequences of Brexit" focused on the repercussions of the UK referendum to leave the EU in a broader global context. Issues such as the global economy, labour mobility and circulation and cultural conflicts were touched upon. The panellists also evaluated whether Brexit can be an opportunity for Switzerland in the wake of substantial changes in the country’s relations with the EU.

On the panel:

Prof. Dr. Humeira Iqtidar is a Senior Lecturer in Politics at King’s College London. She is also Co-Chair of the London Comparative Political Theory Workshop. Her research explores the shifting demarcations of state and market in political imagination, and their relationship with Islamic thought and practice.

Prof. Dr. Mario Pianta is a Professor for Political Economy at the University of Urbino "Carlo Bo" and member of the Centro Linceo Interdisciplinare “Beniamino Segre” at the Italian Academy of Sciences. He has worked on economic growth, inequality, innovation, industrial policy and economic policy in Europe.Prof.

Prof. Dr. Teresa Pullano is Assistant Professor of European Global Studies at the Institute for European Global Studies. Her research interests include critical theory, political theory, political philosophy, political sociology, European politics, nationalism and state formation, critical social theory, as well as social epistemology.

Dr. Thomas Staehelin is a Partner at Fromer Attorney and Notary Offices. Furthermore, he is Chairman of the Basel Chamber of Commerce and President of the Foundation Europainstitut Basel.

The event was chaired by Prof. Dr. Madeleine Herren-Oesch. Prof. Herren-Oesch is the Director of the Institute for European Global Studies, University of Basel. She has written extensively on European history and global history of the 19th and 20th centuries. Within the history of Europe, her work has focused on European expansion, imperialism, and integration.
