RISE Crash Course: «Practical Basics of AI/LLM»

Two-Hour Introduction to Using Large Language Model Chatbots.

AI-generated image showing a workshop situation.

In this two-hour, hybrid event, we will highlight the opportunities and risks of using large language model chatbots (ChatGPT, Gemini, etc.) and reflect on their use in the research process.

LLMs are language models that offer alternative processes to traditional algorithm-based approaches and often lead to faster results. However, this comes at the expense of the transparency of the extraction processes, necessitating adapted quality assurance mechanisms.

Multimodal LLMs in particular can simplify and accelerate a variety of work processes in the humanities. We will show how these models can summarise, correct or translate texts. In addition, we will demonstrate their ability to describe images, transcribe texts and speech and provide this information in a structured form (e.g. as a table or JSON) for further processing. A particular focus will be on the ability of these models to act as different personas to discuss ideas or take on specific tasks. We will discuss the advantages and disadvantages of locally installable LLMs and online services.

The course is aimed at researchers and students in the social sciences and humanities. The number of participants is limited to 15 people (on-site) per session. The course is  offered in English. Questions and contributions in German are, of course, always welcome regardless of the course language. Places will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. Register now.
