SFST Annual Lecture 2023 with Nilüfer Göle (EHESS Paris)
In her keynote lecture, Prof. Nilüfer Göle will revisit the promise and prospect of the Turkish Republic, which was founded in 1923. Over the course of one hundred years, Turkey has been described as a bridge between Europe and Asia; as a secular role model for Muslim countries or increasingly as an example of authoritarian regress. What is the state of the Republic amidst massive transformations and key challenges that Turkey faces at its centennial and beyond?
Prof. Dr. Nilüfer Göle is one of the most influential thinkers from Turkey, who has spearheaded critical interventions both in Turkey and Europe on the questions of Islam, modernity, and secularism. She is Professor of Sociology and Director of Studies at the EHESS in Paris. She is also a board member of the Nomis Foundation and the Director of the European Public Islam project funded by the the European Research Council. She was awarded in France with the Légion d’Honneur in 2014 and l‘Ordre nationale du mérite in 2020.
The event is organized by the Forschungs- und Studienstelle Schweiz-Türkei/Research Association Switzerland-Turkey (SFST) in cooperation with the Institute for European Global Studies, the Graduate School of Social Science, University of Basel and the Department of Anthropology, University of Bern.
