Katekisama Conference: Global “Global Studies”

International conference organised in the framework of the Katekisama research network.

How to study issues of global scope and relevance? How to mediate between the unavoidability of a positionality of any research and the need to transcend positionality in order to claim globality? This international conference is devoted to the question of how “Global Studies” could become more truly global, following discussions in the wake of much criticism launched against area studies for adopting and perpetuating a parochial container view on the one hand, and the high level of abstraction that comes with much mainstream research in the discipline of International Relations on the other. Bringing together scholars of different disciplines and across different career stages from universities in São Paulo, Bonn, Accra, Tokyo and Basel, this conference will first establish different perspectives on and approaches to the topic of global “Global Studies” and then delve into different subject-areas to investigate how the discussion of these topoi changes if viewed by way of a conscious attempt towards global “Global Studies”. The subject-areas are discussed on different panels, namely on (1) Global China, (2) Uses of History and Global History, (3) Migration, Regional and Global, and (4) Platform Technologies, Law and Global Orders.
