A conversation between Antonio Negri and Atsushi Shibasaki is at the center of the latest issue of the e-journal «Global Europe». Among other things, the dialog between the prominent Italian political philosopher and the Japanese scholar of international cultural relations reveals significant cross-cultural intersections between Negri’s theoretical approaches and those of non-European thinkers.

Their talk, which was based on a letter by Atsushi Shibasaki, deals with a range of issues, from Negri’s academic background and his forthcoming book to his view on music and films. In particular, their dialog extends to reaching a comparison between Negri and Makoto Oda and Yusuke Maki, who are less well-known in Europe but have much in common with Negri’s theory and philosophy. Thus, the interview reveals many significant but somewhat overlooked theoretical and philosophical possibilities of cross-cultural interaction between Negri and non-European thinkers.

The conversation between the two scholars took place in February 2018 in Paris. It was facilitated by Teresa Pullano, who served as translator, and her partner Angelo Mastrandrea, who established contact among the scholars.

Antonio Negri is an Italian political philosopher and sociologist. He is the author of over 50 books including Empire (2000), Multitude (2003), Commonwealth (2009), and Assembly (2017), which he wrote together with Michael Hardt.

Atsushi Shibasaki is Professor at the Faculty of Global Media Studies of Komazawa University, Japan. During 2017/2018 he was a visiting professor at the Institute for European Global Studies. He has published several books on international relations, international cultural relations, and the study of global relations.

Teresa Pullano is assistant professor for European Global Studies at the University of Basel. Her present research focuses on interpretations of the European Union as a process of statehood and territorial restructuring at the continental level. She also teaches interdisciplinary courses including political sciences, political theory, and law.

«A Conversation with Antonio Negri: Empire Before and After, Multitude, Passion and Emotion, Bob Dylan and Michael Moore, and More» was published in December 2019. It is issue nr. 118 of the e-journal«Global Europe».
