Heinrich Hartmann has been Professor of the History of Knowledge of Modern Societies at Helmut Schmidt University in Hamburg since 2022. He completed his habilitation at the University of Basel in 2018 and was subsequently a Junior Fellow at the Historisches Kolleg München. His research focuses on the role of knowledge and technology on the southern European periphery, the changes in the human-environment relationship since industrialisation and the knowledge construct of population in European history. His latest book Eigensinnige Musterschüler analyses the scientific networks that made Turkey a hotspot of rural development discourses in the 20th century. He is involved in joint projects with the Europainstitut in Basel on a technical history of agricultural modernisation.
