Dr. des. Christian Futter

Christian Futter's research focuses on the economic and political interdependencies of France in the 18th and 19th centuries. His professional background is in the fields of both history and digital humanities. He is particularly interested in the areas of application that digital research methods open up in the analysis of historical research questions. He is currently investigating the possibilities of using digital methods to explore the European trade networks formed in the long 18th century.
Since 2024, Christian Futter has been working for Data Futures GmbH on the further development and application of digital data management solutions developed at the Institute for European Global Studies at the University of Basel. Previously, he conducted research at the Institute for European Global Studies as part of the SNF-research project "The Divisive Power of Citizenship". He was also involved in the publication of the research data collected at the Institute for European Global Studies in the form of websites (https://www.asia-directories.org/focal/ and https://www.divisive-power.org/). He completed his doctorate at the Institute for European Global Studies in 2023 on the topic of French citizenship in the colonial context during the Second World War.
