Flavio Häner

Flavio Häner's research interests lie in the field of civil protection, disaster risk management and high reliability organizations. With an academic background in cultural anthropology and history, he considers the handling of risks and disasters within societies as a cultural practice. He examines the cultural handling of crises, disasters and risks from a multifactorial perspective as an interdependence of environmental factors, technical, political and economic preconditions, civil-societal structures as well as historically appropriated coping mechanisms.
Since 2018, Flavio Häner has been responsible for the protection of cultural assets during armed conflicts, disasters and emergencies in the Canton of Basel-Stadt. Prior to that, he worked as a research assistant at the Pharmacy History Museum of the University of Basel. He received his PhD from the University of Basel on the history of natural history collections. He participates in several international networks and completed various trainings in the field of disaster management among others at the Center for Cultural Property Protection at Danube University Krems and the UNESCO Chair for Disaster Risk Management for Urban Cultural Heritage at Ritsumeikan University in Kyoto.
