Ralph Weber commented in the article “Switzerland to vet Chinese investment, but some say law is too weak,” which was published on the Japanese news platform Nikkei Asia on 6 January 2026. The article discusses Switzerland’s Investment Review Act, which will allow the screening of investments in “critical” sectors from 2027. Weber notes that proving Chinese state control will be difficult in practice and that the law fails to address larger risks, such as knowledge transfer through espionage.

Ralph Weber is Vice Director and Professor for European Global Studies at the Institute for European Global Studies, Academic Director of its Graduate Program and a Research Councilor at the Swiss National Science Foundation. He specializes on methodological and conceptual aspects of cross-linguistic and cross-cultural research, the global history of political ideas and Chinese politics, particularly the Chinese party-state and its transgressive political activities abroad.
