Evening Lecture with Cyrus Schayegh (Princeton)
Cities and globalization were in the focus of an evening lecture by Prof. Cyrus Schayegh (Princeton University), organized in cooperation with the Basel Graduate School of History (BGSH). It took place on Monday, November 23, at 6 p.m. Prof. Schayegh also held a workshop for PhD students on November 24.
"Global/Third-World Go-Between Cities: Revisiting Post-War Globalization from Beirut, Dakar and Singapore, 1940s-1970s" was the title of Prof. Schayegh's lecture. Prof. Schayegh combined global history, global city studies, and decolonization studies to analyse globalization in the post-war period. He argued that, at the time, Beirut, Dakar, and Singapore were important urban nodes that bundled interactions between Western and post-colonial actors.
On November 24, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Prof. Schayegh held an internal workshop for PhD students entitled "The Middle East as Global Hub? New Approaches to a Connected Region" at the Department of History of the University of Basel. During the one-day event, participants explored transnational and global approaches to Middle Eastern and other area studies. More specifically, they discussed how a transnational perspective - such as analyzing cities through a "glocal" lense - changes political and historical perceptions of the region and its relations to the rest of the world.
Prof. Cyrus Schayegh earned his PhD from Columbia University in 2004. After a post-doctoral fellowship at the Tehran Institute for Management and Planning Studies, he was assistant professor at the American University of Beirut and at Princeton University, where he became associate professor in 2014. His research focuses on the history of the modern Middle East from the mid-nineteenth to the late twentieth century from the perspectives of transnational, global, and Cold War history.
The lecture "Global/Third-World Go-Between Cities: Revisiting Post-War Globalization from Beirut, Dakar and Singapore, 1940s-1970s" was held on Monday, November 23, at 6 p.m., at the Institute for European Global Studies.
The workshop "The Middle East as Global Hub? New Approaches to a Connected Region" took place on November 24, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the Department of History of the University of Basel, Hirschgässlein 21, 4051 Basel. It was organized by the Global History Lecture Group and open to all PhD-students.
