How To Apply

Please apply online through the website of the University of Basel where you will find detailed information on the application process and documents to submit. The following deadlines apply:

30 April for autumn term
30 November
for spring term

If you are currently enrolled at the University of Basel, you can register for our program through MOnA. Please note that different deadlines may apply in your case.

Admission Requirements

Please see §3 of our Study Regulations and the General Study Regulations of the University of Basel for detailed information on admission requirements.

Formal requirements
Applicants holding a Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) with a total of 180 ECTS from a recognized University fulfill the formal application requirements. No minimum GPA is asked of them. Applicants from a University of Applied Sciences (Fachhochschule) need to have earned a minimum GPA of 5.0 in their undergraduate studies.

Academic background
According to §3 of our Study Regulations, applicants have to have earned a minimum of 120 ECTS in one or more of the following fields:

  • Law
  • Economics
  • Political Science
  • Sociology
  • Communication and Media Studies
  • Social and Cultural Anthropology
  • Ethnology
  • History

We also welcome applications from interdisciplinary courses and from programs thematically related to our MA such as East European Studies, International Relations, Middle Eastern Studies, Islamic Studies, Geography, etc. If you have less than 120 ECTS in the above mentioned fields, you may be granted conditional admission and may have to take additional courses on undergraduate level at the beginning of your studies. Applicants with less than 60 ECTS in the above mentioned fields will be rejected.

Language Requirements

The Master's program in European Global Studies is taught in German and English. Even though applicants do not have to hand in a language certificate, we require them to have C1 level according to the Common European Framework of Reference in both languages from the beginning of their studies. German and English proficiency is vital for your success in the Master's program. For placement tests and language courses please contact the Language Center of the University of Basel.
