Prof. Dr. Atsushi Shibasaki is Professor at the Faculty of Global Media Studies, Komazawa University, Tokyo, and Chair of its Graduate School of Global Media Studies. His research focuses on the theory of international relations, international cultural exchange, and the intellectual history of Japan's modern international relations. He is the author of five monographs and co-author/co-editor of several books, the most recent of which are The Intellectual History of Global Relations (2024) and Politics and Music II (2026). He was previously a Visiting Fellow at the Europainstitut from 2017 to 2018. During his current stay as Guest Professor (September 2026–August 2027), he is working on several projects: a major study of Sadako Ogata — historian, former UN High Commissioner for Refugees, President of JICA, and co-chair of the Commission on Human Security — examined through the axes of law and dignity, as part of a collaborative JSPS-funded project on "dignity studies"; a history of the influence and interaction of Neo-Kantian philosophy in modern Japan; a co-edited volume on the prewar poet-diplomat Ken Yanagisawa; a historical study of the Erasmus statue tradition in Japan; and research on music and international society, including Bob Dylan and Toshiko Akiyoshi. He also teaches a graduate seminar on Global Relations Theory centered on Louis Hartz's The Liberal Tradition in America. His work can also be found on LinkedIn, ResearchMap, and Academia.edu, which include English translations of about half of his five published monographs. His research on the katekisama (貨狄様) tradition, published as a co-authored volume, resonates with the Institute's own Katekisama Program.
