Lecture by Prof. Sławomir Łukasiewicz
Sławomir Łukasiewicz, professor for European Studies at the Catholic University of Lublin, delivered an evening lecture titled "Ukraine in the EU? Lessons from the Case of Poland’s Accession". The event, which took place on 12 March 2024 at the Institute for European Global Studies, was attended by students, faculty members, and interested guests.
In his talk, Prof. Łukasiewicz traced core elements of common narratives surrounding European integration, both in the pre-accession and later the participation phase. He particularly focused on the development of Polish narratives about Europe and the EU since the 19th century, and then proceeded to analyze how the events since the end of the Soviet Union have shaped Europe-related narratives in Ukraine. Individual differences notwithstanding, Ukraine and Poland both shared in a uniquely Eastern-European experience in their engagements with Europe. Prof. Łukasiewicz also sketched some emerging difficulties and significant Eurosceptic minority opinions, raising questions about possible futures of the Ukrainian accession process.
The event was hosted by Prof. Corey Ross, director of the Institute for European Global Studies, and moderated by Prof. Olena Palko of the Department of History at University of Basel.
Prof. Dr. hab. Sławomir Łukasiewicz is a historian, political scientist, and Europeanist. He is the recipient of the 2019/2020 Fulbright Senior Award. From 2019 to 2023 he was an associate and visiting scholar at the Davis Center for Russian and Eurasian Studies, Harvard University. From 2015 to 2019 he was director of the Institute of European Studies at the John Paul II Catholic University of Lublin, Poland, where he is professor of European Studies.
