New MA European Global Studies

As of spring 2015, the Institute for European Global Studies offers the new MA European Global Studies. The interdisciplinary study program expands the established tradition of approaching processes of European integration by a global perspective. The study regulations of the new program have been approved by the University Council.

The MA European Global Studies will replace the currently offered master’s program in European Studies. The new study program imparts concepts and methods that demonstrate Europe’s global entanglements in the fields of society, law and economy.

The concept of European Global Studies complements Europe’s internal differentiation on a regional level, it deals with the diversity of (dis-)integration processes, and it makes Europe as a transnational and cultural concept analytically tangible. Instead of an analysis that focuses on the comparison of Europe with other regions of the world, as it is presupposed in the formulation European and Global Studies, European Global Studies advocate a dynamic understanding of Europe that challenges assumptions of fixed boundaries.

The unique feature of the MA European Global Studies is based on this shift from a comparison of countries towards an analysis of European relational networks within and outside of Europe. In this way, the program sensitizes students for the necessity to negotiate the European consensus even beyond the European continent.

The standard period of study for the MA European Global Studies is four semesters, during which a total of 120 credit points need to be obtained. Students enrolling for the study program European Studies during the autumn term 2014 may change to the new study program European Global Studies by the beginning of the spring term 2015.
