Public Lecture by Lawrence Cohen on Biometrics and Aging in India

Prof. Lawrence Cohen, Medical Anthropologist at the University of California, Berkeley, visited the Institute for European Global Studies on Monday, May 26, 2014. At 6.15 pm, he presented a public lecture on the topic “De-Duplicating Old Age: On the Resistance of the Old Body to Neoliberal Governance in India”.

In his lecture, Lawrence Cohen drew from his latest research on the introduction of biometric identification in India, and considered the importance of the old person to emerging debates on welfare, governance, and formality in India.

Lawrence Cohen is Professor for Cultural Anthropology, Chair of the Institute for India Studies, as well as Director of the Graduate Program in Medical Anthropology at the University of California, Berkeley. His primary field is the critical study of medicine, health, and the body. His diverse research interests include aging and Alzheimer’s, homosexuality in Northern India, as well as immunosuppression and global organ trafficking.

His award-winning book No Aging in India (UC Press 1998) is a groundbreaking study of the cultural politics of aging and senility, and a classic of contemporary social science literature on India.
