The European Institute welcomes Prof. Dr Corey Ross as its new director

Prof. Dr Corey Ross is the new director of the Europainstitut at the University of Basel as of 1 June 2023. On taking office, his predecessor Prof. em. Dr. Madeleine Herren-Oesch symbolically handed him the institute key and the gown. Also present at the ceremonial change of director were Vice-Rector Prof. Dr. Thomas Grob and the Dean of the Faculty of Philosophy and History, Prof. Dr. Martin Lengwiler.

Corey Ross, Professor of European Global Studies, was appointed as the new Director of the European Institute by the University Council in December 2022. After studying history at the University of Maryland, the Free University of Berlin and Eastern Mennonite College in Virginia, he received his PhD from University College London in 1998. His research focuses on the history of imperialism, global environmental history in the 19th and 20th centuries, the global, transimperial and transnational circulation of ideas, goods and people, and the barriers that channelled and hindered it.

Ross succeeds historian Prof. em. Dr. Madeleine Herren-Oesch, who has been Director of the Europainstitut since April 2013. Her expertise focuses in particular on the history of the 19th and 20th centuries with their multi-layered global interconnections, also in their effects on the contemporary world.
