Comment by Sagar Naidu and Sriparna Pathak on the Tibet Border Dispute

Sagar Naidu, PhD student at the Institute for European Studies, co-authored an article with Sriparna Pathak of O.P. Jindal Global University on India’s call for a “permanent solution” to its border dispute with China. The commentary was published on the online platform Firstpost on 11 July 2025.

At the SCO summit in Qingdao, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh urged China’s Admiral Dong Jun to seek a “permanent solution” to their border dispute. Despite claims of disengagement, China continues its military activities.

Meanwhile, ahead of the Dalai Lama’s 90th birthday, Beijing has intensified efforts to erase Tibetan identity, from promoting its own Panchen Lama to pushing media use of the term ‘Xizang’ for Tibet.

Analysts warn these moves echo China’s tactics from the 1950s: using promises of peace while consolidating control and call for India to remain vigilant.
