Global Conversations: "Colonialism and Migration in the Portuguese Lusophone World"
The relationship between globalization and the labour force will be in the focus of the next "Global Conversations" evening lecture. Raquel Varela (Universidade NOVA de Lisboa) will shed light on the regulation and migration of labour in the Portuguese Empire. The event takes place on September 29, 2020, at 18.15 and can be attended in person (only members of the University of Basel) or online. Registration is required.
In her talk titled "Colonialism and Migration in the Portuguese Lusophone World: A Global History", Raquel Varela will discuss the effects of globalization on the labour force and the effects of changes in the labour force on globalization. Her analysis starts from the first attempts at effective colonization of the African territory and the massive migration of Portuguese workers to Brazil and closes with the changes in the work force in Portugal throughout the last four decades, within the frame of the country's integration in the EU.
Some of the questions that will be raised are: To what extent did empire structures determine the regulation and migration of labour in the Portuguese Empire from the eighteenth to the twentieth century? How can we connect in history time-space-labour and international relations to help to understand the historical development of an empire?
Raquel Varela is a researcher at the Instituto de História Contemporânea (IHC) of the Universidade NOVA de Lisboa, where she coordinates the Study Group on Labour and Social Conflicts.
The evening lecture "Colonialism and Migration in the Portuguese Lusophone World: A Global History" will take place on Tuesday, September 29, 2020, at 18.15 in the Auditorium (room 00.015) at the Institute for European Global Studies. The number of seats is reduced due to current safety and hygiene measures and limited to members of the University of Basel.
