Lars von Felten-Kury at the Fourth WCEH in Finnland
Lars von Felten-Kury gave a presentation titled “Mosquito Engineering: Environmental Infrastructure and the Entry Question on the Strait of Malacca’s Eastern Front” at the Fourth World Congress of Environmental History (WCEH). The conference, which focused on "Transitions, Transformations, and Transdisciplinarity: Histories Beyond History", took place from 19 to 23 August 2024 at the University of Oulu, Finland.
In his lecture, Lars von Felten-Kury explored “Environmental Infrastructures” for entry and access on the early 1900s Malay Peninsula. Focusing on the spread of malaria on the Eastern coast of the Malacca Strait, it showcases how both humans and non-humans shaped commodity frontiers along a vital global transit corridor.
The WCEH is held every five years and is the major global gathering for scholars in environmental history, environmental humanities and all related fields. It was organized by the International Consortium of Environmental History Organizations (ICEHO), the Biodiverse Anthropocenes Research Programme, the Faculty of Humanities of the University of Oulu, and a Programme Committee appointed by ICEHO.
Lars von Felten-Kury has been a research assistant in European and Global History since 2021. His research interests include global history, environmental history, the history of infrastructure, and capitalism.
