Lien Ling-ling on Enemy Subjects
At the Institute for European Global Studies, Lien Ling-ling advances her research project “Enemy Subjects: Civilian Internment Camps in Occupied Shanghai during the Pacific War”. She will be one of several Visiting Fellows at the Institute for European Global Studies this year.
In her research project on Enemy Subjects, Lien Ling-ling investigates the civilian internment camps in Shanghai under Japanese occupation. In particular she focuses on the analysis of military and diplomatic policies of the involved countries. By examining the operation of the civilian internment system, she pursues to explore how the Pacific War intruded into the civilian realm as well as international arbitration in the war.
Lien Ling-ling is Associate Research Fellow at the Institute of Modern History at the Academia Sinica in Taipei, Taiwan. She is particularly interested in modern China, women’s history, business history and urban culture history. At the Institute for European Global Studies, she advances her research project “Enemy Subjects: Civilian Internment Camps in Occupied Shanghai during the Pacific War”. Since 2010, she edits the journal Research on Women in Modern Chinese History and manages the database project Early Chinese Periodicals Online.
Every year, the Institute for European Global Studies invites selected scholars to join as Visiting Fellows and to work on specific projects related to the overall research approach of the institute. Visiting Fellows provide impulses to their field of expertise and share their ideas about research in and on a Global Europe with colleagues.
