Mpoi Hilpert published Article on Swiss Novel Food Regulation
On 16 April 2025, Mpoi Hilpert published an article titled "Swiss Novel Foods Regulation: From Autonomous Adaptation to a Bilateral Treaty" in the Swiss Review of International and European Law Journal (SRIEL).
In this article, Hilpert examines the potential impact of the envisaged food safety agreement (FSA) between Switzerland and the European Union, focusing on its implications for Swiss novel food regulation. The article begins by discussing the food trade dynamics between Switzerland and the EU, highlighting the challenges Switzerland has faced due to its autonomous adoption of EU food laws. It then explores how the FSA could influence Swiss novel food regulations, particularly in the context of the common food safety area it aims to create. Hilpert argues that the FSA offers substantial benefits for Swiss businesses and consumers through a more streamlined regulatory process and enhanced food safety. While some challenges remain, particularly due to institutional complexities, she concludes that they are unlikely to affect the Swiss novel food regulation negatively.
Mpoi Hilpert is a Teaching and Research Assistant in European Law at the Institute for European Global Studies. She obtained her Master of Law (MLaw) in International and Comparative Law from the University of Zurich. Currently, she is working on her dissertation project titled "The Regulation of Novel Foods in the EU and Switzerland: A Pursuit of Food Safety, Security, and Sustainability."
