The Institute for European Global Studies warmly invites members and students to a talk with Jutta Bakonyi, Professor of Development and Conflict at Durham University in the UK. The lecture titled "Capitalism, Infrastructural Power and Modular Statecraft" will take place on 6 May 2024, 10:30 am - 12:00 pm, seminar room 00.022, at the Institute for European Global Studies. In her lecture, Jutta Bakonyi will discuss the significance of infrastructure in facilitating capitalist expansion, shaping political boundaries, and the role of spatial technologies in reconfiguring state-society relations.

Infrastructures are central to human experiences and are currently a focal point of academic research, with scholars questioning their role in shaping the world. In her presentation, Professor Bakonyi will explore the dual role of infrastructures in both facilitating capitalist expansion and shaping political boundaries. Furthermore, she will analyze how infrastructures disrupt mobilities, co-constitute political frameworks and address the impact of spatial technologies on state-society relations.

Jutta Bakonyi is Professor of Development and Conflict at Durham University in the UK. Her main research interests are the causes, actors and dynamics of violence, orders of violence beyond the state, state dynamics and international interventions. She is also exploring the material and emotive side of violence, for example researching the nexus of displacement and urbanisation and attending to the politics of infrastructures, focussing especially on ports and transport corridors. Her regional focus is on the Horn of Africa.
