Webinar on Digital Annotation – A Joint Approach of Social Sciences, Humanities, and Engineering

RDA Webinar

The Institute for European Global Studies is proud to announce the first in a series of webinars organized in cooperation with the Research Data Alliance (RDA), a community driven, global initiative aiming to rebuild social and technical infrastructures to enable open sharing and re-use of data. This online event on digital annotation took place on July 20, 2020, at 2pm.

This webinar introduces the broad spectrum of annotation paradigms and infrastructure including:

  • access control and workflow management for manual and crowd annotation
  • machine annotation using computational language and neural networks
  • ways of deriving new research data from analysis of annotation outputs
  • effective discovery, re-use, and preservation of scientific annotation

Case studies presented will include projects based on East Asian Business Directories, a major project at the Institute for European Global Studies of the University of Basel. This program has constructed repositories of persons, companies, and treaties from this corpus of 19th and 20th century publications.

This is the first in a series of events focusing on annotation, organized by the Research Data Alliance (RDA) and the Institute for European Global Studies and will be led by Peter Cornwell (ESN-Lyon) and Paula Martinez Lavanchy (TU Delft). Eric Decker (University of Basel), Don Brower (Notre Dame University), Gretchen Greene (NIST), and Nikola Vasiljevic (DTU Copenhagen) are among the speakers.

The webinar took place on July 20, 2020, from 2-4pm CEST. Everyone interested in annotations and fascinated by a close cooperation between the Social Sciences, the Humanities, and Engineering was invited to join the webinar. Participation was only possible upon registration.
