Keynote Lecture with Nilüfer Göle on the 100th Anniversary of the Republic of Turkey

A bridge between Europe and Asia? A secular role model for Muslim countries? The Republic of Turkey has inspired many hopes since it came into existence. In light of its centennial in 2023, Prof. Dr. Nilüfer Göle revisits the promise and prospect of the country during a keynote lecture titled "The Turkish Republic at Its Centennial: Towards or Beyond Post-Kemalism?". The event is organised as the Annual Lecture of the Research Association Switzerland-Turkey (SFST) in cooperation with the Institute for European Global Studies, the Graduate School of Social Science, University of Basel and the Department of Anthropology, University of Bern.

About the speaker

Prof. Dr. Nilüfer Göle is one of the most influential thinkers from Turkey, who has spearheaded critical interventions both in Turkey and Europe on the questions of Islam, modernity, and secularism. She is Professor of Sociology and Director of Studies at the EHESS in Paris. She is also a board member of the Nomis Foundation and the Director of the European Public Islam project funded by the the European Research Council. She was awarded in France with the Légion d’Honneur in 2014 and l‘Ordre nationale du mérite in 2020.

About the event

The SFST Annnual Lecture 2023 takes place on October 2, 2023, at 6.15 pm in the Aula of the University of Basel (Petersplatz 1, Basel).

It is organised by the Forschungs- und Studienstelle Schweiz-Türkei/Research Association Switzerland-Turkey (SFST) in cooperation with the Institute for European Global Studies, the Graduate School of Social Science, University of Basel and the Department of Anthropology, University of Bern.
