EU Citizenship and Federalism: Book Launch with Dimitry Kochenov
Prof. Dr. Dimitry Kochenov talked about his latest edited volume “EU Citizenship and Federalism: The Role of Rights” (Cambridge University Press) at a research colloquium (“Europakolloquium”) on Wednesday, April 26, 2017. The event took place at the Institute for European Global Studies. It was chaired by Prof. Dr. Teresa Pullano.
Dimitry Kochenov's edited volume “EU Citizenship and Federalism: The Role of Rights” examines the under-utilized potential of EU citizenship, proposing and defending its position as a systemic element of EU law endowed with foundational importance. Leading experts in EU constitutional law scrutinize the internal dynamics in the triad of EU citizenship, citizenship rights and the resulting vertical delimitation of powers in Europe, analyzing the far-reaching constitutional implications. Linking the constitutional question of federalism and citizenship, the volume establishes an innovative new framework where these rights become agents and rationales of European integration and legal change, located beyond the context of the internal market and free movement. It maps the role of citizenship in this shifting landscape, outlining key options for a Europe of the future.
Dimitry Kochenov holds a Chair in EU Constitutional Law at the Faculty of Law of the University of Groningen. Besides, he holds a visiting professorship at the College of Europe in Natolin and chairs the Investment Migration Council, a global association of investment migration professionals. His research focuses on Comparative and EU Citizenship Law, Principles and Enforcement of EU Law with an emphasis on the Rule of Law, EU External Relations Law, and the Law of the EU's Overseas. He consults governments and international institutions and organizations. Currently, he is a visiting fellow at the Institute for European Global Studies, where he focuses on the project “Conceptualizing the Inter-Citizenship Paradigm of Belonging”.
The Europakolloquium took place on Wednesday, April 26, 2017, at 6:15pm at the Institute for European Global Studies. The event was chaired by Teresa Pullano, Assistant Professor of European Global Studies at the Europainstitut.
