Colonial Power Through Water: Corey Ross at DAI Freiburg
On May 8, 2025, Corey Ross gave a lecture at the Deutsch-Amerikanisches Institut Freiburg. In his talk titled "The Plumbing of Empire. Urban Waterworks in the Colonial World – and After", he examined how colonial powers built and maintained authority through the control of water infrastructure and how these systems continue to influence the present. The event was organized in cooperation with the Chair of Economic, Social, and Environmental History at the University of Freiburg.
Corey Ross is Director of the Institute and Professor for European Global Studies. His expertise focuses on the history of imperialism and global environmental history in the 19th and 20th centuries. His research on the socio-environmental history of Europe’s relations with the rest of the world builds on interdisciplinarity, investigates the global, transimperial and transnational circulation of ideas, goods and people, and aims to highlight perspectives that are relevant to major present-day and future challenges.
