E-Journal "Global Europe" on Managing Diversity

Can the Indian subcontinent be taken as a role model for managing diversity in Europe? This question discusses Dr. Malcolm MacLaren in the next issue of the e-journal "Global Europe - Basel Papers on Europe in a Global Perspective".

In his paper "The Indian Republic as Governance Guru to the European Union", Malcolm MacLaren follows the thesis that in political integration projects, law matters and politics does too, but that the political culture prevailing matters most. According to the author, the success (or failure) of such attempts is ultimately determined not by the framework rules, institutions, and procedures but by the common (or divergent) values, attitudes, and goals of the political actors involved.

Malcolm MacLaren is a post-doctoral fellow (“Habilitand”) of the Law Faculty at the University of Zurich. Previously, he worked as a researcher in Fribourg and Zurich. He holds different degrees from the universities in Zurich, Frankfurt, Toronto and Oxford. In autumn 2013, he was a Visiting Fellow of the Institute for European Global Studies at the University of Basel.

"Global Europe – Basel Papers on Europe in a Global Perspective" is an academic e-journal. It provides insights into the excellent research of graduates, as well as other young and senior scientists who analyze the global implications of Europe and the European Union. The journal is published in four issues per year by the Institute for European Global Studies at the University of Basel. The publication is available on the website www.europa.unibas.ch/global-europe. In addition, readers can subscribe to it by sending an e-mail to europa(at)unibas.ch.
