On 18 February 2025 Alejandra Lindman successfully defended her PhD thesis on “The Expressive Body as Revolution: Art and the Problem of Abstraction in the Philosophy of Gilles Deleuze”.

This dissertation explores the concept of abstraction through the lens of Gilles Deleuze's philosophy, engaging with thinkers like Nietzsche, Spinoza, and Foucault. It examines different understandings of abstraction, contrasting negative and positive versions, and delves into Deleuze's notion of the virtual and its relation to abstract machines and assemblages. Ultimately, the work analyzes the implications of these philosophical concepts for art, particularly in the context of Pina Bausch's Tanztheater and the expressive potential of the body as a force for transformation.

The thesis was supervised by Prof. Teresa Pullano, Department of Social and Political Sciences of the Università degli Studi di Milano, Prof. Dr. Caroline Arni, Department of History of the University of Basel, and Prof. Dr. Roberto Nigro, Institute of Philosophy and Art History, Leuphana University Lüneburg. The defense was chaired by Prof. Lukas Rosenthaler, Digital Humanities Lab, University of Basel.

Alejandra Lindman wrote her thesis as a member of the interdisciplinary Graduate Program in European Global Studies.
