Corey Ross gave a keynote speech at the international conference "Extraction, Sovereignty, and Markets: Writing Global Economic and Environmental Histories," which was organized by the University of Bern. The conference took place from 28-29 August 2023, and focused on the global influence of natural resources on sovereignty, law, and trade.

The keynote lecture held by Corey Ross was titled "Water Resources, Empire, and Beyond: Reflections from the Water Faucet and Irrigation Canal." The conference invited researchers to analyze natural resources and their impact on national and international trade and regulations in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. This international event was organized within the framework of the research project "Anticipations and Disruptions of the ‘Synthetic Age’: Rubber, Science and Resources, c.1839–1945", funded by SNF-Ambizione and coordinated by Dr. Moritz von Brescius, University of Bern and Harvard University.

Corey Ross is Director of the Institute and Professor for European Global Studies. His expertise focuses on the history of imperialism and global environmental history in the 19th and 20th centuries. His research on the socio-environmental history of Europe’s relations with the rest of the world builds on interdisciplinarity, investigates the global, transimperial and transnational circulation of ideas, goods and people, and aims to highlight perspectives that are relevant to major present-day and future challenges.
