Ralph Weber and Silvana Târlea Publish Article in JCMS
Prof. Dr. Ralph Weber and Dr. Silvana Târlea have recently published an article in the Journal of Common Market Studies (JCMS). The piece is titled «Politics of Immobility: Global Knowledge Production and the Study of Europe in Asia».
Recognizing that Europe and Asia find themselves increasingly connected, the article asks two interrelated questions: Why is there limited knowledge mobility in the study of Europe throughout Asia? What factors drive this immobility? Weber and Târlea take account of the existing literature and complement it by offering a more global picture of European Studies in Asia. Throughout the article, they assume a decidedly political perspective. The study of Europe, they claim, is not only an academic affair, but subject to a politics of (im‐)mobility driven by state and non‐state funders and influenced by local as well as domestic diplomatic, trade‐related, and strategic factors. The article aims at contributing to the understanding of how Europe is studied in Asia. It highlights the importance of non‐educational factors for future debates about knowledge mobility and the possibility of a global science.
Prof. Dr. Ralph Weber is Associate Professor of European Global Studies at the Institute for European Global Studies. He specializes in Political Theory, Chinese Politics, and modern Confucianism. Currently, he is the President of the European Association for Chinese Philosophy and the Chair of the Section on Political Theory in the Swiss Political Science Association.
