Lerato Posholi and Ralph Weber Participate in Workshop at the University of Johannesburg
“Epistemic Injustice and Epistemic Decolonization” was the topic of a workshop organized by the African Centre for Epistemology and Philosophy of Science of the University of Johannesburg. The event took place on 9 March 2023 in the context of a collaboration visit by Lerato Posholi and Ralph Weber from 6-10 March 2023.
In the course of the workshop, the participants explored different aspects of decolonization and epistemic injustice, including concepts and politics of Eurocentrism (Ralph Weber), the question of how to decolonize (Dimpho Takane), Kwasi Wiredu’s conceptual decolonization (Lerato Posholi), or the complications of decolonizing the curriculum (Veli Mitova).
The workshop was organized by the University of Johannisburg’s African Centre for Epistemology of Science in collaboration with the project Resersing the Gaze at the Institute for European Global Studies. The African Centre for Epistemology and Philosophy of Science is an independent entity of the University of Johannesburg with close links to the Department of Philosophy. It aims to decolonize knowledge through African voices in Philosophy, strengthening knowledge systems in both North and South. Along similar lines, the SNSF-funded research project Reversing the Gaze seeks to deploy concepts developed in the Global South to the North.
Lerato Posholi is an SNSF Fellow in the project "Reversing the Gaze: Towards Post-Comparative Area Studies" at the Institute for European Global Studies. She holds a PhD in Education from the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg. Her research interests include social epistemology, decolonial theory and curriculum studies.
Ralph Weber is Associate Professor of European Global Studies at the Institute for European Global Studies. He specializes in Political Theory, Chinese Politics, and modern Confucianism. He served as President of the European Association for Chinese Philosophy until 2021 and is currently the Chair of the Section on Political Theory in the Swiss Political Science Association.
