Keynote Lecture by Madeleine Herren-Oesch

Prof. Dr. Madeleine Herren-Oesch, director of the Institute for European Global Studies, presented the keynote lecture of a conference on transepochal perspectives. The lecture was presented at the Department of History on Friday, November 28, 2014, at 7.30pm.

Prof. Dr. Madeleine Herren-Oesch spoke on the topic "Decolonizing Epistemologies at 90°N 0'W? Floating Territories, Shrinking Times Frames and a Global Rescue Mission". This keynote lecture was part of the conference “Beyond Modernity – Transepochal Perspectives on Spaces, Actors and Structures”. The conference takes place at the Department of History from November 28 to 29, 2014 and is organized in the context of the Annual Meeting of the Basel Graduate School of History. The Institute of European Global Studies is co-organizer of the event.

By looking at the interplay between historical change and historical spaces, this conference raises the question of whether transepochal perspectives can be rediscovered without adopting the normative assumptions that deeply affected the tale of modernity. By focusing on Europe, Asia and Africa, it looks at the consequences of long-term scales for global history.

The keynote speaker Madeleine Herren-Oesch is director of the Institute of European Global Studies and Professor of Modern History. Her research interests include European history and global history of the 19th and 20th centuries, the history of international organisations, the League of Nations, and the United Nations, internationalism and 19th century foreign policy networks, soft power and public diplomacy, the historical development of transboundary networks and international civil society, historiography and historical methods with a focus on transcultural concepts, and encyclopaedias, knowledge transfer and information cultures.
